10 Best Things to Do in Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale has traditionally been known for its world famous beaches and entertainment. But these days, this city just North of Miami has blossomed to become an all around excellent getaway destination.

Las Olas Boulevard is a shopaholic’s dream, while numerous state parks call out to nature lovers looking for solace. Some wild bars on the riverwalk have transformed into refined craft breweries, while gourmet restaurants continue to pop up every year.

Then there’s the undeniable allure of the city’s sugary shores, framed by the boundless expanse of cerulean waters that stretch to the horizon. Bask in the sun as you sift through feet through the sand. Margarita, anyone?

Armed with deep knowledge of the local scene, we’ve curated this list of ten fantastic things to do while staying at a Sunrise Vacation Home!

1. Unwind at Fort Lauderdale Beach

A radiant strip along Florida’s southeastern coast, Fort Lauderdale Beach is perfect for every beach-side activity imaginable. Its seven miles of soft sands are an open invitation for a sun-soaked R&R or aquatic adventure. With shallow and (mostly) calm waters, it’s common to see families with kiddos happily swimming or building sand castles.

Beach bums looking to recharge should come with a stack of books, rent an umbrella, and grab a spot under the swaying palm trees. Spend time leafing through the books with the soothing background music of ocean waves.

Water sports enthusiasts will find ample opportunities for kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, parasailing, or paddleboarding. Renting gear, jet skis, or a boat is conveniently available from the nearby Aloha Watersports.

When the post-dip hunger strikes, scan through chalkboard menus of beachside eateries on the Fort Lauderdale Promenade. Primanti Brothers Pizza and Grill is perfect for a casual bite, while S3 (Sun Surf Sand) provides an upscale dining experience with sushi and tantalizing small plates.

Pro Tip: If you prefer peace and quiet, visit early in the morning and catch the sunrise!

2. Shop and Eat Along Las Olas Boulevard

Las Olas Boulevard, stretching from downtown Fort Lauderdale to the glistening Intracoastal Waterway, is Florida’s epicenter for shopping, dining, and entertainment. This lively thoroughfare is adorned with art galleries, upscale fashion boutiques, quaint cafes, and waterfront eateries.

Here’s an ideal morning itinerary for a visit to Las Olas Boulevard.

Start your day with a steaming cup of coffee at Ann’s Florist & Coffee Bar. This lovely cafe doubles as a fantastic setting for people-watching or light reading. And if art tickles your fancy, meander to the New River Fine Art Gallery after you’ve had your caffeine fix.

By now, you’re getting hungry. Does a cheesy Pizza Napoletana sound appetizing? Grab one at Louie Bossi’s Ristorante Bar Pizzeria, or opt for Mexican fare at El Camino. Lovebirds looking for a more upscale experience might go for Lobster Bar Sea Grille for a luxurious and decadent seafood meal in an elegant ambiance.

3. Traverse the Intracoastal Waterways on Water Taxis

The label “Venice of America” aptly captures the essence of Ft. Lauderdale’s miles of inlets and canals. Beyond their pseudo-Euro appeal, the waterways brim with waterfront attractions, entertainment hubs, and restaurants.

Leaving the “yachting capital of the world” without exploring the waters would be a missed opportunity. Skip Uber and opt for the water taxi to get around the city. It makes 10-11 stops, connecting beaches, museums, galleries, restaurants, and more along the Intracoastal Waterways. But it’s not just a mode of transportation – it’s an immersive experience guided by a crew of local experts eager to share their insider knowledge of the area.

Consider charters for a private boat or luxury yacht for a more intimate and exclusive journey.

4. Watch a Show Aboard the Jungle Queen Riverboat

Sitting right next to the beach, visiting Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is a breeze! If you can’t get enough of the waters, you can rent a kayak and jet skis to use within the park.

Navigate the park’s dense foliage on a bike through winding trails, or opt for a hike along the longest trail that loops through the entire park. Most of the trails are suitable for beginners; just be mindful not to disturb the park’s thriving wildlife.

You have the option to purchase a bag of food to feed them or simply enjoy observing them from a distance. Besides these orange-hued beauties, expect to spot ducks, snakes, alligators, peacocks, turtles, and maybe even a bear.

A historical gem, the Wray House, nestled within the ground, stands as a preserved relic from the 1930s and is worth a brief visit.

Hop on an airboat ride through alligator habitats and keep an eye out for wild birds and reptiles. Remember to pay close attention to your Captain’s narration of the Everglades’ history while spotting gators — a Jurassic Park experience in real life.

The park also hosts on-site exhibitions. It includes a 65-year-old alligator and opportunities to interact with baby gators with “Meet a Baby Alligator.”
